In case you haven't heard...

...our wedding was featured on offbeatbride.com today!

I was pretty obsessed with OBB when we were planning the wedding and reception and submitted our profile just as soon as I had pictures in my hands. It took a few months, but here we are!

Seymour!

We adopted a dog from the Idaho Humane Society yesterday! Seymour is a 7 month old Shar-pei/Lab mix and is the cutest thing ever! Actually, his name was Niko at the IHS and we have decided to rename him....Seymour is much more fun and fitting. Anyway, he's house trained and walks really well on a leash (we went for a pretty long walk last night). He can sit and lay down and one of the papers says he can "drop it" too. When we were walking through the kennels yesterday afternoon, he was one of the only dogs not barking like crazy. I still haven't heard him bark at all, but Josh says he let out two barks while I was at the gym yesterday; our neighbors dogs were barking at Seymour and I guess he decided to try it out too and got bored or something. He still kind of smells like the kennels at the IHS and needs a bath, but we didn't put him through that last night. Anyway, less talk, more pictures!

Stupidity on the Main Payette

Woman saved by a cat boater on the Main Payette

A woman nearly drowned on the Main Payette on Sunday (8/2/09) due to complete stupidity. The unidentified woman, approximately 55 years of age and 220 pounds, was paddling in a tandem inflatable kayak with a male, approximately 25 years of age. The woman, appropriately nicknamed “Triple D” by other boaters, was wearing a helmet but no life jacket for the majority of the float. Upon entering the rapid known as “AMF” the couple was dumped from their IK, which sent both of them into the river. The woman was submerged, while her partner stayed afloat in his rented life jacket. The woman struggled to stay afloat and was saved by what bystanders can only assume to be her bosoms. A nearby cat boater ferried upstream to aid the woman in staying afloat and ferried both swimmers to more shallow water. Upon her arrival to more shallow water, the woman claimed to have forgotten her life jacket on shore after pumping up the IK with more air. The rescuer sternly responded to the woman’s forgetfulness of leaving her lifejacket on the shore by stating it is an easy hike to the road and informed her that she should never be on the river without a lifejacket ever again.

With a note of seriousness, it is stupidity such as this that keeps the river from being far from safe. Though considered a great river to learn to run rapids, the Main is not a fool proof river, and no one is invincible. I have a particularly difficult time asking folks to put on life jackets or encourage them to wear an extra that’s sitting in my car, mostly because I’m not sure they will listen (and because they haven’t listened in the past). The fact of the matter is that in the end I am responsible for their stupidity. I wish I had talked to the aforementioned woman prior to seeing her run Mixmaster or AMF and told her to get the hell out of the river and walk to the road. I certainly wasn’t happy about picking her out of the water and lecturing her AFTER she swam. Part of problem was that some of the boats on the river with us were not wearing their vests during the calm stretches. I suppose I should have asked them to put their jackets on as well for the sheer fact that most people on the river probably never saw the few in our group put their jackets on when the rapids came. The last thing we need is law enforcement on the river enforcing life jackets, proper gear, or appropriate whitewater vehicles. As safe boaters, we need to attempt to instill our safety precautions to anyone who may or may not listen.

Days off

At the direction of my supervisor, I took Monday and 1/2 of Tuesday off from work. I've never gardened in my entire life, but for some reason I decided it would be a good plan to follow through with my desire to have that bush in the backyard removed. I got a bit out of control and cleaned up the entire backyard (with the help of my future sister-in-law, Adrianne). I realize I only took one "before" picture, but you might appreciate me telling you that the back deck was covered in leaves and twigs and the tables and chairs were stacked along the fence by that tree. The tree was also out of control and today I chopped off some of the branches. I don't know if this was a good idea or not, since I'm not an arborist (isn't this the correct term? spell check is saying not...), but I don't really care very much right now. I also dug out all of the leaves from behind that tree. I still have to attempt to dig out the gigantic roots from that stupid bush, and that is going to be a pain in the ass, as they are huge and rocks are embedded in them. The only reason I took a picture of the lawn bags was to show you how much work I actually managed to do yesterday and today. I think I used a total of 14 lawn and leaf bags! Who knew yard work could be so therapeutic?

On the loss of a friend

My friend, Patrick, provided the following words today. They are perfect for this time. For those unaware of Sunday's events, see my facebook page.

Thoreau's words:

“On the death of a friend, we should consider that the fates through confidence have devolved on us the task of a double living, that we have henceforth to fulfill the promise of our friend's life also, in our own, to the world.”

Grieving does strange things to a person...like Making them garden.

I like to think I am really funny and creative

I sent this e-mail out to the entire agency....I can't begin to tell you how many people thought I had a chronic illness...

From: Miranda
Sent: Friday, March 13, 2009 11:57 AM
To: Everyone at work
Subject: An unfortunate condition....can you help?

Teammates -
I've recently come to realize that a condition I've been not-so-blessed with for several years has flared up over the past few months. It appears as though the only thing that has aided in keeping this condition (Fatomahthighs) under control in the past has been proper diet and exercise, both of which I have been unsuccessful in maintaining for more than a period of approximately 3 days. In my quest for controlling Fatomahthighs, I've determined that I am in need of some sort of accountability (apparently the scale is not enough) and perhaps a partner (or several for that matter) to encourage me to increase my activity level. Knowing the above information, aren't you excited to help?!

Here is what I would like to see happen:
1. You e-mail or call me if you are interested in participating in a little contest.
2. I collect all names of those interested and form two groups/teams.
3. Each team will have a team go-getter to encourage participation and to give updates on which team is winning.
4. Over the course of about 4 weeks each individual will document their activity levels (more information about documenting activities forthcoming!)
5. The team with the most points (again, more information forthcoming!) WINS!

Now, you may be wondering what, exactly, the winning team will win. I haven't a clue. However, I can tell you that it will be awesome and creative and...well....probably something homemade....that is, unless someone has a better idea.

So what do you have to do? You need to e-mail or call me by next Wednesday (3/18/09) so I can divvy up the teams and get all of the rules straightened out. The contest will officially begin on Monday, 3/23/09 and will end on Sunday 4/19/09. Don't worry, POST attendees! If you want to participate but don't get a chance to tell me prior to heading out to the Academy, just write down your activities (duration + activity) and shoot me an e-mail when you come back and I'll add you to a team! Simple as that!

Ready? Let's do this! Miranda :)

I'm in love with my new headband!

I wasn't really sure of what to do with my hair though because I dried it really messy, so I just tossed it up in a bunch of bobby pins. My hair is getting so long that if I don't actually dry it and make it nice, I look like a bag lady. Anyway, I got the headband from mixbaby on etsy and I just ordered another one today to wear for the wedding because I'm obsessed and in love.

(I was attempting to call Adrianne while taking the picture....but the phone is hidden and it looks like I'm attempting a glamor-shots-esque pose...)

Gotten

I don't know what my problem is. For some reason I've become obsessed with people who use the word "gotten." As in, when they say it, I cringe, almost as if it's not a real word. It's come the point where I have made a conscious effort to take the word out of my vocabulary entirely and replace "gotten" with "obtained" or something similar. Tonight I decided to google the word, and I found out that it can be used in regard to obtaining, becoming, or moving. However, it CANNOT be used in terms of possession. I've found that most people, when using the word, do so in regard to possession. How's that for random and obsessive?

My hair is getting ridiculously long...

...but I kind of want to keep it this way for the sheer fact that I love the way it looks under my North Face beanie. Is that weird?

Vegas bound (again)!

We found a killer deal on Southwest Vacations from Boise to Vegas for our birthdays again this year! We're staying at Planet Hollywood from 4/25/09 to 4/27/09 (sorry, Shauna and Chris....we really want to be at your wedding....we didn't even think about the fact that this was the date of your wedding until after we reserved the tickets. eek!).

Who wants to join us? Consider this our bachelor/bachelorette parties, if you will....

Seriously, is there any better way to spend your 30th and 31st birthdays? I think not! Bring it!

Home Makeover

As my friend, Amy, pointed out, we are "nesting." We have been talking about getting all new flooring in the house for a long time, but finally settled down and made the plans. Yippee! We went to the flooring store to pick out carpet and vinyl almost 2 weeks ago, the carpet measuring guy came last week, and our scheduled installation of all new flooring in the entire house started yesterday. In addition to packing up our entire house and moving all of our belongings into the garage, over the weekend we decided it would be a good idea to paint before getting the new carpets were to be installed. So off we went to Home Depot to pick out some new colors in order to paint Brooke's room and the 2 bathrooms. Pictures are posted here. We never would have finished everything if not for the help of Josh's sister, Adrianne. Just when I thought all of the painting was done, we decided to paint the baseboards, door trim, and window trim in the bathroom to help tone down the orange last night. The new trim, along with our new shower curtain have helped tone it down. Whew!

Josh also did a little rewiring (with the help of Adrianne's husband, Jake) so we won't have speaker wires all over the house. I'll try to post more pictures of the new carpet and vinyl when it is finished today or tomorrow. Not gonna lie, it could take awhile, because now we will have to move back into the house! Ack! Talk about sore muscles! Sore muscles or not, I'm loving our new digs!

Oats in a Crock

I obtained some ambition yesterday and made a truckload of soup (to be frozen for lunches this week and next and the next...) and then last night I made steel cut oats in the crock pot. I'm really not sure why I did that because I had full intentions of sleeping in and then going to the gym when it opens. After all, I got new running shoes yesterday and I want to try them out! But this morning when Josh was getting ready to head up to Bogus to go skiing, he couldn't find one of his ski socks and I was (not really) forced to go downstairs and show him where it was located. And then it semed ridiculous to go back to sleep. To make a long story short, I got to eat my oatmeal!

Here you go Alison:

--Find a bowl that fits into a crockpot so that the lid can can still fit on the crockpot.
--In that bowl, mix 1 cup of steelcut oats, 4 cups of water, and a dash of salt.
--Place water in the crockpot so that when the bowl is placed inside the crockpot, the water level in the crock is the same level as the water level in the bowl.
--Put the lid on the crock and turn on low overnight.

In the morning I mixed up some frozen blackberries with some milk and splenda, microwaved it a bit, then mixed it with 1/2 cup of oats. Mmmmmm.
